Research Stays in the United States for Colombian Doctoral Students

This call for applications is open to Colombian citizens who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a higher education institution in Colombia.

Description of the exchange

The Fulbright Visiting Student Researcher Program (Class of 2027) offers doctoral students in Colombia the opportunity to spend 6 to 10 months at a university or research center in the United States to undertake a research stay that will advance, enrich, and accelerate the progress of their doctoral studies.

Through this experience, participants will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories, specialized archives, field data collection, and international mentorship with professors in the U.S., thereby enhancing the scientific quality of their projects and fostering bilateral academic collaboration.

Requirements and Required Documents

To apply, please read the following carefully: Terms of Reference (ToR) for Cohort 2027 and be sure to upload the following required documents to the application platform:

  • Nationality: Colombian citizenship and residence in Colombia.
  • Academic Status: Be officially enrolled in a doctoral program at a university in Colombia at the time of application.
  • Doctoral Research Project: Detailed Proposal for the Research to Be Conducted in the U.S.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): In English.
  • Letter of support from the home university: A certificate from the institution in Colombia confirming the research stay.
  • Letter of invitation: Issued by the host university or research institution in the United States.
  • Letters of recommendation: Three (3) letters of recommendation uploaded through the platform.
  • English proficiency: A valid official English proficiency test score (TOEFL IBT, TOEFL ITP, IELTS Academic, or Duolingo Test).
  • Supporting documents: ID card and academic diplomas in PDF format.

At the end of their stay in the U.S., the selected individuals must return to Colombia and remain in the country for a minimum period of two (2) years to share and apply the knowledge they have acquired, in accordance with the regulations governing the J-1 visa granted to them.

Notes:

Individuals who have completed academic programs in English-speaking countries may be exempt from the language requirement.

Benefits

Those selected for the Class of 2027 will receive comprehensive support as specified in the Terms of Reference:

  • Monthly support: A financial stipend to cover living expenses during the stay in the U.S. (for 6 to 10 months).
  • College Costs
  • Airline tickets: Round-trip international airline ticket (Bogotá–U.S.–Bogotá).
  • Visa Application Process: Exemption from the J-1 visa fee, as well as institutional support and guidance throughout the process.
  • Health Insurance: Basic Program for Limited Medical Coverage for Accidents and Illnesses (ASPE).
  • Support: Pre-trip orientation, monitoring, and institutional support throughout the entire stay.

Note: Any matter not mentioned in the Terms of Reference will not be covered by the program.

  • Call for Applications Opens: August 19, 2026
  • Application deadline: October 12, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (Colombia time)

Steps to apply:

  • Please note: Download and carefully read the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the call for proposals.
  • Register: Go to the Fulbright Colombia Application Platform and create an account or log in.
  • Complete: Fill out and submit the online application on the platform.
  • Upload documents: Upload all required supporting documents in PDF format.
  • Submit: Complete and submit your application through the platform by October 12, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
  • Start of stay: Second semester of 2027.
